What is the deal with the short link?

Short links are conventionally used to reduce the size of your URLs to allow extra content in posts for systems limiting character usage, but as we have seen, in Twitter, they always count for 23 character. Beacon shortens the URL you enter for convenience of the person reading the post and so that we can track your audience’s response through to your website and their actions after that.
